Listening to a new song a day

ALICE PHOEBE LOU has an incredible sense of melody

MARCH 13TH, 2022

In an effort to create more plot in my life, I’ve made a goal to try and listen to one new song a day. A pretty attainable and unimpressive goal. No stipulation of necessarily like the song or the artist, and it doesn’t even need to be a recently released song. Just an exercise to expose my ears to something new.

So far this has led me to checking out Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On, an endearing 2010 debut album called Smoke Rings from an artist called Dri, and most recently, the discography of Alice Phoebe Lou.

Getting ready one morning, “Dusk” played on Spotify’s shuffle through Kate’s phone, and it immediately cut through the usual chorus and delay. The saxophone in the outro placed in such a charming way. This seemed like an appropriate artist to explore more than just a promo single.

Songs like “Silly” and “Lovesick” are imprinted in my brain. Instrumentation that feels so familiar, and even borders the line of feeling ‘phoned in’ seem to sound so tender and grand with her vocal melodies accompanied. It’s a testament to her ear. How skillful it is to hear chords and rhythms and know exactly how to evoke the most amount of emotion from it. Making gourmet pastries from household essentials.
